Mesopotamia
Mesopotamia was the ancient civilization between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in what is now Iraq. The word Mesopotamia means “the land between two rivers” in Greek. The land was priceless because it was fertile and good for farming. It didn’t rain much, but these early people learned that watering crops could be painless if you built an irrigation system – canals to bring water to the land from the rivers. The people were certainly not helpless! They could take care of themselves.

There were four classes of people in Mesopotamia. The priests, the highest class, were powerful. While today it might be called tasteless, the priests shaved their heads. The people of the upper class wore fancy clothes that were always clean and spotless. Both the men and the women wore jewelry. The lower class people worked in the fields or in shops. It was often thankless work, but they were paid for it.

The slaves, the lowest class, worked for the king, the temple, or rich people and did not get paid. They were shoeless until they were adults and got their first pair of leather shoes. Slaves were bought and sold, but they were not homeless. They lived in a small shelter with other slaves who worked for the same owner.
